ABOUT THE ARTISTS

SERGIO MENDES
The musical journey of Sergio Mendes begins in Brazil in 1956, where upon hearing Dave Brubeck, he is inspired to start performing with other jazz “aficionados.” By 1961, Mendes has formed the Bossa Rio Sextet and the group becomes very popular in Rio de Janeiro and all over Brazil. He begins travelling all over the world performing at fashion shows and in 1962 appeared in the famous Bossa Nova Festival at Carnegie Hall. The NY Times declared Sergio’s appearance to be a highlight of the evening. In 1964, he moved to California where the first incarnation of “Brasil” 64 is formed followed by Brasil 65. After deciding to add female vocals to his instrumentals creating the sound that will be recognized all over the world, Sergio meets Herb Alpert who produces the first BRASIL 66 album which becomes an immediate success. The smash hit “Mas Que Nada” becomes the first song sung entirely in Portuguese to reach the top five in the United States. Now an international star, Sergio toured with Frank Sinatra, took his band on tour in Japan, and performed at the White House for both Nixon and Reagan. He won a 1993 Grammy Award for his recording “Brasileiro”. More recently, Sergio Mendes released TIMELESS in 1966 featuring a stellar cast of guests that included The Black Eyed Peas, Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake and many more. His music has been featured in the animated films, “RIO” (for which he received an Oscar nomination for best song in 2012) and “RIO 2.” In addition to the celebration tour, Sergio is planning a new CD and a television special to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Brasil ’66.

SHEILA E.
Singer, drummer and percussionist Sheila E. is best known for her collaboration with Prince and has toured with Ringo Starr’s All Star Band, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, and Beyonce. Her hit singles include “The Glamorous Life” and “A Love Bizarre.”
